In a normal year, produce crops transition twice per year and the transition this year was significantly impacted by abnormally cold and rainy weather in both the Northern and Southern regions. Broccoli, cauliflower and all lettuces have been majorly affected during the heavy rain storms we had in January and February, reflecting in historically high pricing on these commodities. Planting gaps are in the forecast during this transition period, which is also causing the desert to finish their harvest quickly. Growers in the Salinas Valley do not anticipate full harvest production to begin until late April to early May. Thus, all major and minor growers will be affected by this gap and yet to see any relief any time soon.
Note that the Broccoli, Cauliflower and Lettuce market have skyrocketed and have hit historical highs.
