CANTALOUPE: This is one of the most popular commerical variety. The orange flesh has an excellent flavor and aroma. "Cantaloupe" is also used to describe a group of melons that are characterized by their round or slightly flat shape with rough wart-like skin. Named after a town called Cantalupa near Rome.
AMBROSIA: This is a variety of cantaloupe that looks and tastes similar to a regular cantaloupe, except it has a much more fragrant aroma and flavor.
CHARANTAIS: Grown mainly in France, this is another melon in the cantaloupe group. It is sometimes referred to as a "French breakfast" melon. The skin is rough like a cantaloupe, except it also has shallow segments on the outside.
CASABA: This bright yellow melon has a ribbed, wrinkled rind. The flesh is pale and sweet, but does not have a lot of flavor.
CRENSHAW: This melon has delicate thin skin that ranges from green to yellow. The flesh is pink to light orange, with some varieties having green flesh. A good crenshaw is very aromatic and sweet with a slightly creamy flavor.
GALIA: Sweet, with light-green flesh.
HAOGEN: This melon originated from Israel. The skin is yellowish with green stripes and the flesh is green.
HONEYDEWS:The flesh can be light green or orange. It has a good sweet flavor, but not much fragrance.
